Interior design needs vary across Kerala depending on housing type, climate exposure, and local building styles. Here’s what tends to matter most in each of the major cities we cover.
Kochi (Ernakulam)
Kerala’s largest urban housing market, dominated by high-rise apartments. Space-efficient layouts, modular kitchens, and moisture-resistant materials matter most here given the coastal humidity and smaller average unit sizes compared to independent houses.
Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram)
A mix of independent villas and mid-rise apartments. Traditional Kerala home layouts are more common here, which often brings Vastu considerations into interior planning alongside modern modular fittings.
Kozhikode (Calicut)
Independent houses are still the norm in much of Kozhikode, giving more flexibility for full-home turnkey interior projects and larger kitchen layouts than typical apartment constraints allow.
Thrissur
A mix of heritage-style independent homes and newer residential developments. Renovation and false ceiling upgrades to older homes are a common interior design need in this region.
Kottayam
Predominantly independent houses with garden or courtyard space, which often shapes interior planning around natural light and ventilation more than compact-apartment space-saving concerns.
Regardless of city, Kerala’s humid climate makes material choice — plywood grade, hardware finish, ceiling board type — a bigger factor in long-term durability than in drier parts of India. Our guides go into these material considerations in more detail.
