Vastu-Friendly Interior Design Tips for Kerala Homes

Vastu Shastra plays a significant role in home design decisions across Kerala, whether you’re building a new house or planning interiors for an existing apartment. You don’t need to redesign your entire home to follow good Vastu practice — small, practical adjustments to layout and furniture placement cover most of it.

Kitchen Placement and Direction

The southeast corner of the home is traditionally considered ideal for the kitchen, governed by the fire element. If your kitchen is already fixed in another direction, the more practical fix is cooking-stove placement — position the stove so the cook faces east while cooking, and keep the sink away from directly facing the stove.

Living Room and Entrance

The main entrance is considered most favorable facing north, east, or northeast, as it’s believed to allow positive energy into the home. For the living room, keep heavy furniture like large cabinets or bookshelves along the south or west walls, leaving the north and east sides more open for movement and light.

Bedroom Guidelines

  • The master bedroom is generally recommended in the southwest corner of the home.
  • Beds should ideally be placed so the head points south or east while sleeping.
  • Avoid placing a mirror directly facing the bed.
  • Keep the bedroom door opening inward without obstruction from furniture.

Pooja Room Placement

The northeast corner (Ishanya) is widely regarded as the most auspicious spot for a pooja room or prayer corner, since it’s associated with spiritual energy and receives good morning light. If northeast isn’t available in your layout, east-facing placement is the next preferred option.

Practical Adjustments for Existing Homes

Not every home can be rebuilt to match ideal Vastu directions. In practice, most Kerala homeowners work with what they have and make smaller corrections: adjusting furniture placement, adding mirrors to “correct” missing corners, using specific colors associated with each zone, and keeping the northeast area of the home clutter-free and well-lit. These adjustments are far more achievable than structural changes and are commonly used by interior designers working on existing Kerala homes.
